Preservation foundation buys collapsed building 'La Moda de Paris'

WILLEMSTAD - Stichting Monumentenzorg Curacao has bought a collapsed building on Conscientiesteeg in Otrobanda. The property is popularly known as 'La Moda de Paris'. The facade of the property collapsed in December 2020.

After the collapse, there was no other option for the former owner than to transfer the buildings as soon as possible, so that at least part of it could be preserved.

On the one hand, Monuments Conservation says that it is happy with the purchase because it could achieve its primary objective - the preservation of the built heritage -, but on the other hand, it is aware of the great challenge it has taken on.

Conservation: “The roof of the house is in a deplorable condition. Hull restoration will therefore have to be carried out as soon as possible. But before this phase is reached, it is first necessary to clean up the collapsed part of both buildings. The latter is very important because the alley can be cleaned up again and thus an alley that has been closed for a few years can be made accessible again. "

Monument preservation is convinced that this serves the community. It is not yet known which function will be assigned to the buildings. "First, it will be cleaned up, measured and a drawing will be made and only then can the design be started," says the foundation.
