PHILIPSBURG - Grisha Heyliger was ousted on Thursday as chairman of the parliament of Sint Maarten. She was voted out by eight votes in a public meeting.

Heyliger announced her resignation in a Facebook livestream after the meeting. Her resignation means that a new president must be elected during a parliamentary meeting. The upcoming meetings will be chaired by Vice-Chairman William Marlin.

The former chairman has also said goodbye to the political party UP. She will continue as an independent Member of Parliament. In the livestream, Heyliger states that she has been manipulated and bullied and that a climate has been created within the party in which women must remain submissive.
