Press release related to high temperatures in schools: All primary education schools and special primary education schools can close at 12:00 PM.
WILLEMSTAD - The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports (ESKD) has taken note of the extremely high temperatures these days. Therefore, the Ministry is in continuous deliberation with the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature (GMN) and the Meteorological Service Curaçao (Meteo) to monitor the weather situation. Together, the decision was made to allow primary education schools and special primary education schools to close at 12:00 PM during the week of June 5th to June 9th, 2023. This decision has been announced to all school directors and schools.
Meteo has announced a heat warning, and we are experiencing high temperatures reaching 37.5 degrees Celsius. This has consequences for the health of certain groups of people. Therefore, it is important to take measures to protect staff, young children, students, and pupils. In light of the excessive heat, we request that the current heat protocol/instructions be followed in schools.
The Ministry of ESKD is making a request to all School Directors and schools to monitor the heat situation in schools and, if necessary, take measures in consultation and cooperation with the Education and Science Sector (UOW).
Before taking any action such as school closure, contact must be made with UOW to reach a mutual agreement. You can contact the Ministry of ESKD at +599 9 4343788 or +599 9 5281409.
Additional prevention measures during high temperatures:
Allow children, students, and pupils to wear lighter clothing (not too thick).
Increase the provision of cold water in schools and classrooms.
Avoid activities in direct sunlight.
Avoid excessive movement and sports during this season (especially after 10:00 AM).
