Public Prosecution Service organizes masterclasses on mediation

Local | By Correspondent July 12, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - During these two weeks, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) is organizing Masterclasses on Mediation in Criminal Cases and Restorative Justice. The courses are provided by Rebecca Leeuwenberg and Kim Roelofs from Amsterdam.

In April 2022, a select group was trained as Mediator in Criminal Cases. These mediators can now themselves supervise mediations in Curaçao in criminal law, in which suspects and victims enter into discussions with each other under professional guidance. The outcome is taken into account by the Public Prosecution Service and the judiciary when settling the case.

In addition, a group of twelve people completed the specialization as Recovery Mediator last week. Restorative mediation can be used if parties need a confrontation before or after criminal proceedings.

Leeuwenberg and Roelofs are both registered mediators and registered teachers. During the masterclasses and the training they work together with guest teachers from Curaçao. The project is a collaboration with the Public Prosecution Service and the Court of Curaçao and is made possible in part by Corendon.
