Rhuggenaath: Schools remain open

Local | By Correspondent August 31, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath has indicated today that the schools in Curaçao will remain open for the time being.

There is, however, daily consultation with the various school boards and other stakeholders. If there is an infection in a school, measures are taken, says Rhuggenaath. But that does not mean that we close all schools. Rhuggenaath is also the interim Minister of Education.

According to the minister, the situation in the schools on Curaçao is evaluated daily. He emphasized at a press conference this morning that there is no need to panic.

Contrary to what the Prime Minister believes, the new education union DOEN is of the opinion that the schools on the island should be closed.

That was already DOEN's position, but this was confirmed again during a virtual meeting that was held on Sunday. President of the union Marbella Felipa announced this. According to Felipa, Curaçao is seeing more and more corona infections.

It is safer for both teachers and students when the schools are closed, says Felipa. In this way, more infections can be prevented.
