Rhuggenaath: “The Netherlands gives little room for negotiating conditions”

Local | By Correspondent September 8, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao’s list with adjustments to the conditions set by the Netherlands is not long. Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath says that he does not have the impression that the space is wide open to conduct long negotiations. "Undersecretary Raymond Knops of the Interior and Kingdom Relations has given the space to respond to the legal text and we will now do that," said the Prime Minister. It is unknown whether and what Knops will do with the reactions.

As is known, the Netherlands has submitted a package of conditions which Curaçao must agree with in order to qualify for the third tranche of financial aid.

It has been agreed that Curaçao may offer comments and changes to the terms and conditions. Curaçao wants to discuss the scope of the powers of the Caribbean Reform Entity (CHE) and the degree of participation of the countries in the CHE.

Last week, Knops said during his visit to Curaçao that the Dutch conditions cannot be changed. Rhuggenaath is therefore not very sure about whether the Netherlands will actually do something with the comments of Curaçao: "We may be able to find common ground and possibly we can put our questions to the Council of State," said Rhuggenaath.
