WILLEMSTAD - This month, schools can decide for themselves what measures they should take in connection with the heat. That was decided in consultation with the Ministry of Education.
The last few weeks have been extremely hot on the island and a warning applies almost daily. Because many classrooms do not have air conditioning, it is sometimes impossible to teach in a healthy way. The minister has therefore decided that school boards may take measures themselves in September, such as the introduction of a tropical timetable.
This means that the students are sent home at 10 or 11 in the morning.
The minister emphasizes that a heat directive is also being worked on in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. This should include how activities can be adapted to the weather, that enough water should be drunk and that more breaks should be introduced.
