Schools closed for longer due to risk of contamination

Local | By Correspondent January 4, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The Christmas and New Year’s holiday will last a bit longer because of the new wave of corona infections. The primary and secondary schools will not open again until January 10 instead of January 6. This was decided by the Minister of Education, Sithree van Heydoorn, in close consultation with the crisis team and the school boards.

This gives schools the opportunity to review the existing corona protocols. The aim is to prevent new infections at school. These days it is also mapped how many teachers are infected with Covid-19. In addition, the school staff gets the chance to take a booster shot.

From today until Saturday 8 January, all teachers and non-teaching staff can get a booster shot at SDK sports complex in Brievengat between 2 pm and 5 pm. There will be a separate queue for teaching staff, the Ministry of Education said.

Last month, schools in the Netherlands closed a week earlier than planned, for fear of the omicron variant of the corona virus. The figures showed that children in the upper years of primary schools were a source of rapid spread of the virus. Yesterday, the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) decided that the opening of primary and secondary education is justified from next Monday.

Tomorrow, Minister Van Heydoorn will provide more information about the reopening of schools in Curaçao.
