WILLEMSTAD – In a short message on social media, former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte announced that at the beginning of this week, he has finally reached an agreement with the Public Prosecution on the payment of the 1.8 million guilders.
Schotte says that this agreement entails how the payments will be done and that he is already complying with this obligation. Schotte also says that he cannot comment anything else regarding this agreement since this is one of the conditions which both parties agreed upon.
Schotte also declares that with this agreement he will not go to prison. And he thanked all those who supported him throughout this process.
Schotte was convicted of money laundering and official corruption. During his time as Prime Minister, he received at least 1.8 million guilders in bribes and channeled this through bank accounts abroad. The MFK party founder had to transfer the 1.8 million guilders to the Public Prosecution Service, otherwise he would have had to serve a three-year prison sentence.
The Prosecution has not commented on this agreement yet.
