Schotte: the right to a bank account

Local | By Correspondent May 16, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The convicted former prime minister of Curaçao, Gerrit Schotte wants the Orcobank to unblock his account. During summary proceedings he instituted, he invoked that a bank in principle offers primary payment services to every adult legally residing in Curaçao.

Orcobank's lawyers responded in detail to Schotte's defense and explained that bank accounts of consumers in the Netherlands who were convicted less than eight years ago for, for example, money laundering and forgery can be blocked.

The Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten is of the opinion that, despite the absence of that legal right in Curaçao, the Orcobank was allowed to block the account. It is unknown when the judge will rule.
