SDKK prisoners show resilience

Local | By Correspondent April 13, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - An anonymous prisoner wrote a letter today about coronavirus in the Curaçao prison (SDKK). There is great unrest among prisoners about the risk of infections there.

Last week many of them went on strike because they didn't feel safe. Guards would not work with face masks and gloves, nor would they keep their distance from the prisoners.

According to this anonymous prisoner, the strike was broken with rubber bullets and tear gas.

All 65 prisoners housed in the same prison block as the author of the letter held a church service to pray for good health and for their families and the guards.

The church service was initiated by a prisoner who has been behind bars or seventeen years. He said that he had been shot and stabbed several times in all those years but is now really afraid he won’t be able to go home.

The author of the letter concludes by stating that the service was a success and that it was good to see that inmates can support each other.
