WILLEMSTAD - According to Yvette Raveneau of environmental organization Amigu di Tera, the sea around Curaçao is even more polluted by the heavy rainfall of the past period. This is due to leaking sewers and cesspools, Raveneau indicated today. According to the environmental activist, the sewage issue is a major problem on the island that should receive more attention.
The problem is topical again because it recently became known that excess water from the wastewater treatment plant at Klein Hofje is discharged into the Piscadera Bay via a porous and old pipe. According to Raveneau, the inland water of Piscadera is already heavily polluted because in the past chemicals from the refinery were discharged into it.
