Seaquarium has been looking for options to reduce the dolphin population for a long time

Local | By Correspondent May 31, 2022

THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - Seaquarium has been looking for a solution for the excessive number of dolphins that they work with for a long time. There are too many, says Laureen Schenk, spokesperson for the organization.

She does not say which options are being considered, also the reason why Seaquarium does not want to come out with news about the dolphins that have to go, nor the number that is involved.

The Dutch animal welfare organization Animal Rights thinks it knows what is going on. Five dolphins are said to be about to be sold to and transported to the Fakieh Aquarium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

According to the organization, it concerns the dolphins Serena, Machu, Mosa, Sami and Luna.

To prevent a possible transport, Animal Rights says it has filed a lawsuit, but Seaquarium or the Dolphin Academy know nothing about this.

In any case, Seaquarium says it had not received any documents.

Animal Rights and other concerned people fear the dolphins will not survive a move to Jeddah. Moreover, the care of Dolphins in the dolphinarium there would not meet international standards.
