Second group of extra Marechaussee personnel to Curaçao in October

Local | By Correspondent August 26, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The second group of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee that will provide reinforcement for border control on Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten is expected in October. The first group of thirty employees started in July.

The protocol on strengthening border control was signed last year by the responsible ministers from the Netherlands and the islands. “Cross-border crime such as smuggling narcotics, weapons and people has a subversive effect on our society”, according to the Curaçao Police Force (KPC). “In addition, the worrying social situation in Venezuela is also putting great pressure on the islands' border controls.”

The aim of the Strengthening Border Control Protocol is to take measures to strengthen border control and improve mutual cooperation between the services of the various islands. In addition to border control, the Marechaussee will also deal with knowledge transfer and extra assistance to various services.
