Secretary of State asks Caribbean countries for a new dispute settlement initiative

THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - State Secretary Alexandra van Huffelen (D66) of Kingdom Relations and Digitization asks Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten to come up with a new initiative for the dispute settlement. She mentions this in a letter to the Dutch Parliament last week.

At the beginning of the letter, Van Huffelen recalls the request of the members of the standing committee for Kingdom Relations (KOREL) to the State Secretary for the Interior and Kingdom Relations of 12 October. This letter concerned the request to send an overview as extensive as possible of the possibilities that the Caribbean countries have to 'challenge a decision of the Kingdom government in court'.

The State Secretary deals with the wishes of the members by looking at the options under the General Administrative Law Act (Awb) or under civil law.

“I share the opinion of the Advisory Department of the Council of State of the Kingdom that it is important to make a distinction between bodies of the Kingdom and bodies of the countries,” said van Huffelen. The State Secretary offers the governments of Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten the opportunity to come up with a new initiative for the dispute settlement.
