WILLEMSTAD - Sinterklaas arrived in Curaçao last weekend. He was not seen in the St. Anna Bay, as usual, but entered Curacao via the Caracas Bay. The entry could only be seen on television and via the internet. Children were not allowed to be present at the entry. This has mainly to do with the COVID-19 measures.
Sinterklaas arrived in Curaçao with "colored friends". Instead of Zwarte Pieten (Black Petes), there were many assistants of Sinterklaas in all colors of the rainbow. After his arrival, the Saint went to restaurant Taboosh, which could also only be viewed virtually.
The traditional entry of Sinterklaas into St. Anna Bay has been canceled this year. The organization announced that the party was canceled for various reasons. This concerned the COVID-19 measures, the poor financial situation on the island, as a result of which business owners would not want to sponsor and the discussion about whether the celebration of Sinterklaas together with his Zwarte Pieten is not racist. These were reasons for the organization not to continue with the event. The virtual entry of Sinterklaas into the Caracasbaai was organized by another organization.
