Six percent sales tax remains at the same level

Local | By Correspondent November 17, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Finance Javier Silvania maintains the six percent rate of sales tax. Silvania makes this known on his Facebook page. Currently, a six percent sales tax is charged on the products and services that the government believes should be paid by as many people as possible.

Silvania indicates that now is not the time to introduce an increase in the rate. This is based on the economic situation of Curaçao. When the coalition agreement was signed, the government still had plans to raise the rate to seven percent, but is now abandoning this. This is due to the Covid-19 situation on the island and the higher prices in the shops.

Plans to withhold sales tax from a payment with a debit card immediately and deposit it into the government's account, will continue to exist. That should make new legislation possible. It is still unknown how Silvania intends to compensate for the loss of revenue for the government.
