Six to eight years in prison for tax office arsonists

Local | By Correspondent January 20, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Yesterday, the Public Prosecution Service demanded six to eight years in prison against three suspects for their involvement in the fire at the tax office in August 2019.

It concerns one Haitian and two Venezuelans. They acted on behalf of a construction contractor with tax debts who had previously been sentenced to ten years in prison.

The three who were on trial yesterday were not present at their case. The two Venezuelans were held in Venezuela at the request of Curaçao, but were released and have since gone missing. Venezuela does not want to cooperate with their turnout and extradition.

The Haitian is also missing and is hiding in Haiti. The damage to the tax office on Regentesselaan amounted to more than 42 million guilders. The verdict is in three weeks.
