Social Minimum and Cost of Living Remain Key Issue for Caribbean Netherlands

Local, | By Correspondent February 2, 2026

THE HAGUE - While Curaçao is not part of Caribbean Netherlands, the coalition agreement’s discussion on social minimum standards highlights broader Kingdom concerns about poverty and cost of living.

The Dutch government commits to building a livable social minimum in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, based on recommendations from the Thodé Commission. The measures include keeping basic needs and utilities affordable while ensuring that entrepreneurs are not overburdened.

Although Curaçao falls under a different constitutional framework, the policy signals continued attention to socio-economic disparities across the Kingdom.
