State Secretary Van Huffelen vows to continue advocating for the caribbean islands following cabinet's fall

Local | By Correspondent July 10, 2023

THE HAGUE - State Secretary Alexandra van Huffelen, representing the D66 party, expressed her disappointment over the collapse of the Dutch cabinet Rutte IV, according to her spokesperson. After a year and a half, the coalition government comprising VVD, D66, CDA, and ChristenUnie failed to reach a consensus on migration restrictions, leading to the cabinet's downfall.

Since January 10, 2022, Van Huffelen had held the position of State Secretary for Kingdom Relations and Digitalization in the Rutte IV cabinet.

"It is truly unfortunate that, as a cabinet, we are unable to accomplish the task at hand," lamented the State Secretary, who now assumes a caretaker role. Consequently, only ongoing matters will be addressed, and contentious issues will be put on hold.

The implications of the caretaker status of the Dutch cabinet on the Caribbean islands remain uncertain. New elections are scheduled to take place later this year, most likely in November. Van Huffelen assured, "We will continue our work until a new cabinet is formed."

The State Secretary emphasized her unwavering commitment to advocating for the well-being of the residents in the Caribbean region of the Kingdom.
