Strong Criticism in Dutch Parliament of U.S. Military Intervention in Venezuela

Local | By Correspondent January 9, 2026

THE HAGUE – A large majority of Dutch MPs have voiced strong criticism of the United States’ military intervention in Venezuela, arguing that the arrest of Nicolás Maduro constitutes a breach of international law. Parties representing roughly two-thirds of the House called on the government to speak more clearly and publicly about the legal implications of the operation.

Speakers from ChristenUnie, D66, GroenLinks-PvdA and Volt warned that failing to condemn such actions could weaken the international legal order and embolden other global powers to act outside established norms. Several MPs emphasized that international law exists precisely to restrain the actions of powerful states, including allies.

At the same time, some parties urged caution, pointing to Europe’s security dependence on the United States and warning against actions that could damage transatlantic relations. Minister Van Weel acknowledged the legal concerns but stopped short of issuing an outright condemnation, stating that the cabinet continues to assess the situation carefully.
