Summary proceedings against restart refinery

Local | By Correspondent June 7, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Foundation Clean Air Everywhere and 41 citizens are starting summary proceedings against the Country of Curaçao because of the real chance of a restart of the refinery.

They want to prevent the reopening of the Isla because of the air pollution. According to the plaintiffs, the air pollution would rise above the internationally accepted minimum level again with a working refinery. According to Clean Air Everywhere and the citizens, the country must provide the new operator with clarity about the World Health Organization (WHO) standards in a timely manner by issuing a nuisance permit.

The government itself should also keep track of the air quality standards at the Kas Chikitu monitoring station. Failure to do so will result in a penalty of 100,000 guilders per day.
