SVB income not enough to cover BVZ

Local | By Correspondent December 7, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - The year 2019 was the last time that the income of the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) was sufficient to cover the expenses of the basic health insurance (BVZ). Since 2020, the SVB has been in the red on this part every year.

Even with a national contribution of about 280 million guilders, the SVB falls short. The contribution is approximately the same as what is collected in premiums for the basic insurance. The national contribution, which is raised from general (tax) resources, was even more than the premium income in 2019.

According to the SVB budget of 2022, things started to go wrong since 2020 and since then the insurance bank has been in the red. In that year the deficit was 19.5 million guilders. A deficit of 21.6 million guilders is expected for 2021 and a deficit of 10.8 million guilders is expected for 2022.
