WILLEMSTAD - A top official of the tax authorities is no longer allowed to go to work. The official is accused of having removed 264 thousand guilders in tax debts of a local company without permission or in accordance with the regular procedures.
This was announced by the Minister of Finance Silvania on his Facebook page. It was previously known that the government accountant SOAB was investigating the matter. SOAB is also check how the civil servant has behaved over the past five years.
The minister said then that he assumed that fraud has been committed more often. "Because if someone just presses a button and cancels a customer's debt, we can assume that this has happened more than once," Silvania said.
The head of the Tax Department informed Silvania of the matter after the internal investigation was completed. He then decided to have SOAB investigate the irregularities further. The minister expects a report at the beginning of the new year and will look at what measures will be taken then.
