Taxi drivers block Megapier exit

Local | By Correspondent January 24, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Taxi drivers blocked the Megapier on Sunday by sitting in front of the exit. Due to the corona infections in Curaçao, the cruise ship Aida Perla had pre-booked tour buses to transport the tourists in a bubble across the island.

The drivers were not informed about the organized tours and were told on the spot that the passengers could not use the taxis. This caused great dissatisfaction, after which the taxi drivers decided to block the exit.

Even after several requests from the police and the captain of the Aida Perla to leave, the drivers remained seated. Minister Ruisandro Cijntje of Economic Affairs (MEO) came on site to mediate.

According to Cijntje, the protest arose due to poor communication from the cruise ship organization. "The ship should have informed the taxi drivers and that has not happened," Cijntje indicated. A small group of passengers was eventually able to cross the island by taxi.
