Teachers’ Union DOEN Demands Clarity After Reported Serious Incident at MIL

Local | By Correspondent January 9, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Teachers’ union DOEN has expressed serious concern following media reports about an alleged serious incident that reportedly took place on Wednesday afternoon at MIL during school hours. The union says the information circulating publicly is alarming, particularly given that the incident allegedly occurred while students and staff were present.

In a statement, DOEN said that although different versions of events are currently circulating, the scale and nature of what has been reported have caused unrest among teachers, staff, students and parents. The situation is compounded, the union noted, by the lack of timely and clear communication from official channels to counter rumors or provide reassurance.

DOEN emphasized that the safety and well-being of teachers, school staff and students are its top priority. According to the union, any incident that may have endangered the lives or safety of students or personnel must be handled with the utmost seriousness and transparency.

At this stage, DOEN says it is still awaiting official information about what exactly occurred, what risk assessment was carried out, and which safety measures have been or will be implemented. The union stated that this information is essential in order to properly assess the situation and determine what steps need to be taken.

The union expressed hope that official communication will follow as quickly and comprehensively as possible, so that a sense of safety and calm can be restored within the school environment.

DOEN also announced that its board will meet later today and that members will be informed through internal channels about the date and time of a meeting with staff of MIL who are members of the union.

The union said it remains alert and open to dialogue, stressing the importance of a safe and healthy working environment. This is especially critical, DOEN added, when it concerns a school, which must always be a secure place for everyone who works at or visits the institution.
