Teachers' union DOEN to meet with minister tomorrow

Local | By Correspondent October 28, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The scheduled meeting between the teachers' union DOEN and Minister Dorothy Hato of Administration, Planning, and Services, as well as Minister Sithree van Heydoorn of Education, has been postponed to tomorrow, Tuesday, October 29. This meeting will focus on crucial proposals from the union aimed at improving working conditions within the education sector.

Leading up to the meeting, DOEN held an online session last Thursday with education sector employees. During this session, the union addressed current salaries in education and clarified which staff members will qualify for final payments in 2024. They also discussed the impact of recent government decisions, particularly the removal of the 12.5 percent measure, on educational personnel.

DOEN presented a five-point proposal during the discussions. This plan is designed to address the interests of all educational roles, from teachers to support and administrative staff, emphasizing how current working conditions affect the quality of education. Specific attention was given to the roles of classroom assistants, school principals, and vice-principals.

At the conclusion of the online session, an online survey was opened, allowing all educational workers to provide their input on the union's proposals. This feedback is a vital part of the preparation for the upcoming meeting with the ministers.

The five-point plan aims to mitigate the negative effects of the 12.5 percent measure on education and collaborate with the involved ministers to ensure the quality of education in Curaçao.

The union has announced that following the presentation of the proposal during the meeting, further details and the results of the discussions will be made public.
