"The Netherlands must recognize Tula mistakes"

Local | By Correspondent August 19, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao historian Jeanne Henriquez believes that the Netherlands should acknowledge the mistakes surrounding Tula's death. She said that on August 17 in the Dutch newspaper NRC.

She also thinks that the Netherlands is guilty of portraying the freedom fighter negatively and would like to get rehabilitation for Tula in this way.

On the day Henriquez made that announcement, Curaçao celebrated the Dia di Lucha pa Libertad: the Day of the Freedom Struggle, or Tula Day. 225 years ago, on August 17, 1795, Tula started his struggle for freedom. Tula was killed in a horrible way.

This event is commemorated every year. On that same day the online slave register was also inaugurated.
