The Ocean Inside; a unique multimedia experience at the Cathedral of Thorns

Local | By Press release September 10, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - After Canada and Spain, Curaçao can finally enjoy the inspiring art lecture with display of an audiovisual experience by Eveline Kolijn, called “The Ocean Inside”. This artist gets inspirated by microbiology and cleverly bridges the gap between nature and art in an inspiring way. She has spent a large part of her childhood on Curaçao which contributed to her passion for nature and in particular the ocean. A graphic video installation will be set up in the Cathedral of Thorns, on which “The Ocean Inside” will be shown. The projection screen is handmade by the artist herself and hand-printed with mica powder, in other words particles of glass pearl. Each image shown is made by Kolijn herself on Curaçao, among other places, and displays the importance of the sea for humanity. During the film, quotes are displayed in different languages, including Papiamentu, Spanish, Dutch, but also some indigenous languages, which support the image and the message to be conveyed.

“I create are that speaks to the emotion. You can in theoretically know and learn everything, but if it does not appeal to you emotionally, it is not enough for you. My art speaks about all environmental issues, the environment and how we are connected to The Web Of Life. This connection is a combination of knowing, understanding and feeling. As an example, did you know that plankton in the sea generates no less than half or our oxygen. In fact, every second breath you take is made possible by the sea.”

The art of Eveline Kolijn is based on Aristotle’s statement: “Educating the mind, without educating the heart, is no education at all”. In this quote, Kolijn sees the importance of art and creativity which is needed in present day to bring about an expansion in thinking. The Cathedral of Thorns was built along the same line of this philosophy.
