The salary of government officials

Local | By Correspondent April 10, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - The Central Bureau of Statistics of Curaçao (CBS) recently took note of an article entitled "Is the official's pay slip a monthly insult?" It states that, according to CBS calculations, "the government, after the Financial Services sector, was the best-paid sector in Curaçao in 2011 '. A table was published with reference to the Census 2011 of Statistics Netherlands as a source.

The CBS, however, does not recognize the figures mentioned concerning the average salaries of the economic groups. Information about incomes per industry can be found in the publications "Income and income distributions in Curaçao, Census 2011" and "The economic status of the population of Curacao, Census 2011". It can be deduced from these two publications that the sector "Public administration and defense and compulsory social insurance" is, after "Professional careers and scientific and technical activities" the highest paid sector.

However, it should be noted that, in accordance with the International Standard Industrial Classification of Activities (ISIC), the sector "Public administration and defense and compulsory social insurance" consists of the following activities:

• Public administration (Parliament, Ministers and Ministries)

• Public services to the community as a whole (including the Ministry of Defense, i.e. the Navy, the Coast Guard and VKC and the Judiciary, i.e. the Public Prosecution Service)

• Compulsory Social Insurance (SVB)

In other words, the average wages mentioned in the sector "Public administration and defense and compulsory social insurance" not only concerns the salaries of civil servants at government institutions, this also causes the average salaries to be higher.
