Think To DO Institute releases first findings of mindset survey

Local | By Bonnie Benesh June 17, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - In Curaçao, we regularly hear broad statements such as: "our mindset needs to change", without any further elaboration or specification. To understand exactly what kind of mindset dominates our culture and learn how to transform people’s mindsets into those of resilience, The Think To Do Institute (T2DI) has conducted a nation-wide research on mindset, and how mindset influences the resiliency of our population. Between the period March 2020 up and until December 2020, a total of 1021 people completed the survey. This paper reports on the most important findings of this survey.

A growth mindset relates to what extent a person formulates long term goals and strives towards these with determination and persistence.

An abundance mindset relates to what extent a person is oriented towards serving the needs of others. People with an abundant mindset are more inclined to form reciprocal relationship with others. This improves social cohesion and creates economic opportunities.

Based on the data from this survey, it can be concluded that the hypothesis is correct: People that have an abundant and growth mindset experience higher positive life outcomes. Further, the data indicates that in Curacao there are more persons with a fixed mindset than a growth mindset.

Once it is correctly diagnosed that mindset is an important factor that determines positive life outcomes, the next step is to deploy intervention strategies aimed at nurturing and fostering the right mindset in individuals. The findings of this study provide valuable insights about the state of our nation’s mindset and how this affects individual as well as collective quality of life outcomes. This finding is the first of the findings that T2DI will share related to mindset and resilience. More findings will be shared, along with specific recommendations, in the coming months.

The Think To DO Institute is an independent, apolitical think tank located in Curaçao, Dutch Caribbean.  The T2DI has as its purpose to help Curaçao become a more resilient society by producing research that is based in best practice, and which delivers practical solutions to the barriers that hold the community back from becoming more resilient.  Research evidence shows that Resilient Societies are created by attention to people, to organizations, to place, and to knowledge.  Resilient Societies design, redesign organizations, institutions and systems to better absorb disruption, operate under a wide variety of conditions, and shift more fluently from one circumstance to the next.
