WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao literally stands still for 2 minutes today during Remembrance Day. We all commemorate the victims of the Second World War. 176 people of Curaçao descent lost their lives during this war. This is more than was always assumed.
Previously, the death of 129 people was commemorated. New research by Jos Rozenburg shows that more Curaçao casualties have occurred in the fight against the German occupation. During the commemoration on the Waaigat, a new plaque with the names of the 176 victims of the Second World War will be unveiled. The plaque will be placed at the war memorial on the Waaigat.
The theme of the commemoration at the war memorial and military cemetery on Roodeweg is 'Freedom in alliance'.
