Trade unions ready to manifest against Curaçao being used as hub for humanitarian aid

Local | By Correspondent February 18, 2019

WILLEMSTAD - In Curaçao, trade unions and politicians are concerned about Curaçao's decision to cooperate with the United States in carrying out humanitarian aid to Venezuela. The critics believe that Curaçao should remain politically neutral and should not be "abused" by America.

America is strongly opposed to the government of President Nicolas Maduro. Last month, Washington recognized as one of the first countries in the world opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the new representative of the country.

The joint trade unions and, among others, parliamentarian of the party MAN Giselle McWilliam said Friday that Curaçao should not choose a political color in that battle. They are afraid that Venezuela will take measures against Curaçao.

The United States has previously asked whether Curaçao can serve as a pivot in helping the needy population of neighboring Venezuela.

This is also the reason why the trade unions have called their members to go on strike tomorrow morning. They will manifest their disapproval during a march to Fort Amsterdam.
