Tumba Festival 2021 without an audience

Local | By Correspondent January 27, 2021

WILLEMSTAD - A tumba festival will also be held in Curaçao in 2021. But this time without an audience. The festival will be shown live on the local television channels.

The government pays part of the costs. It will be a "revival" festival over the past fifty years. This is what Minister of Education, Sports, Culture and Science Steven Croes said yesterday during a government press conference. With that, the fiftieth version of the tumba festival can take place.

Croes emphasized that tumba belongs to the cultural heritage of Curaçao and that the government wants the public to be able to enjoy the festival this year as well.

Musicians' organization AMAK, the organizer of the tumba festival, is pleased that the festival can continue this year. Unlike usual, it will be less of a festival to come to a winner, but more of a tribute to 50 years of tumba. AMAK also considers it important that musicians can perform again.

There are strict rules for the number of musicians who can be on stage at the same time and the distance they must keep from each other.
