WILLEMSTAD - Several undocumented migrants escaped from the SDKK prison in the early hours of this Wednesday.
Sources close to the inmates informed the Spanish news site Noticias Curazao that they would have used a small saw to cut the bars of one of the windows.
The sources indicated that these people were in an "extremely desperate" situation which is why they decided to flee. It is presumed that around 21 inmates would have escaped around 5 this morning.
Since last Monday, a group of inmates had begun a hunger strike in order to draw the attention of the authorities, pointing out a situation of harassment, poor diet and lack of medical attention.
Several inmates of Venezuelan nationality - who are possibly now at large - had requested asylum or protection, claiming that it was not safe to return to their country. The European Court of Human Rights recently ruled that 33 of these people could not be deported while their cases are being investigated.
Meanwhile, the authorities have not yet issued any official pronouncement related to this escape.
