Undocumented migrants locked up in regular prison

Local | By Correspondent May 23, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - Arrested undocumented migrants, especially from Venezuela, are transferred to the regular prison due to space shortage. The foreigners' barracks are getting full and that's why the Venezuelans are now locked up with regular criminals.

Both men and women are transferred to prison. Several men have gone on hunger strike because of this. They demand that they be allowed to freely await their trial for protection under Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights and that they are not transferred to prison.

According to the human rights organization Human Rights Defense Curaçao (HRDC), they are denied access to the barracks. Lawyers are also said to have been refused when they wanted to visit their clients last week. According to HRDC, this goes against local and international law.
