Local, | By Correspondent January 27, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Union of Pensioners for Progress and Justice, Unie van Gepensioneerden voor Vooruitgang en Rechtvaardigheid, marked its 40th anniversary on Sunday with a thanksgiving mass followed by a gathering at the atrium of the Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort. The organization, which advocates for the interests of pensioners on Curaçao, reflected on its history while also looking ahead to future challenges.

The mass was celebrated by pastor Juan Usme of the Brievengat parish, with musical accompaniment by Mirto and Ronny. In his reflection, Usme emphasized the importance of unity within the community. Following the service, the board of UPAH presented a donation to the Brievengat parish, which is currently facing serious structural issues due to damage caused by termites. The pastor expressed his gratitude and announced that restoration work on the roof is expected to begin in the near future.

During the subsequent gathering, UPAH chairman Oswin Martina reflected on the organization’s origins and outlined the challenges ahead. He stressed that further growth is necessary and that digitalization will play a key role in strengthening the organization.

According to Martina, UPAH will place a strong emphasis in 2026 on improving its digital capacity. He also noted that the organization’s current office space has become too small and that efforts are underway to find a larger location, possibly in a vacant school building. Martina indicated that after the Tumba Festival, UPAH intends to reopen discussions with the government on this matter.

The chairman also addressed recent tensions surrounding pension-related issues, which have occupied UPAH in recent months. He stated that despite setbacks, the organization has continued its work with dignity and determination and expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved so far.

During the event, special recognition was given to the staff of the UPAH office for their dedication. Attendees received a commemorative token in honor of the organization’s 40th anniversary.
