Update: Call for a direct bond with the Netherlands increasingly stronger

Local | By Correspondent September 29, 2020

WILLEMSTAD - In a possible referendum, the current "autonomous status" of Curaçao will still receive the most support but compared to the referendum of 2005 it is losing a lot of ground. The call for a "direct relationship with the Netherlands" is growing stronger. This is evident from an opinion poll by Kenniscentrum Curaçao / University of Curaçao.

The majority of the population is in favor of a new referendum on the future constitutional structure, the researchers conclude based on the results.

Fifteen years ago, more than two-thirds, 68 percent, of the Curaçao electorate opted for option A (independent Country within the Kingdom). Option D (an integral part of the Netherlands) then received 23 percent. Now that is 37 to 45 percent.

More than half of the respondents (56 percent) think that Curaçao should continue to negotiate support with the Netherlands. 22 percent say that Curaçao must accept the conditions and 13 percent absolutely not. 10 percent say they have no opinion.
