WILLEMSTAD - At many Curaçao supermarkets, the prices for vegetables, fruit and meat have increased in recent months. For example, if you paid 30 guilders for a sirloin steak at Supermarket 2000 in February, this month you had to pay 41 guilders.
This is the conclusion of the consumer foundation Fundashon pa Konsumidó, which compared the prices of products in June with those of February at a total of 22 supermarkets. The price differences are large in some cases.
For example, this month at Vreugdenhil you pay 17.50 guilders for a kilo of loin ribs, while you could still buy the same kilo of ribs in February for 9.95 guilders. An increase of more than 7.50 guilders.
A similar price increase can be seen for fruit and vegetables. Take a kilo of bell peppers at Dande Supermarket; in February you still paid 5.95 for a kilo, now 4 months later you see 9.50 on the price sticker.
