WILLEMSTAD - Veterinarian Pieter de Geus has been sentenced on appeal to a suspended prison sentence of twelve months for attempted manslaughter by shooting with an air rifle. In addition, he also receives a community service of 240 hours.
Two years ago, De Geus shot his neighbor in the neck with an air rifle after an incident in which the neighbor had destroyed a dividing wall. He was sentenced to 36 months by the first judge, but the Court has opted for a lower sentence in view of De Geus' personal circumstances. This is because he runs a veterinary practice and the prison sentence is expected to mean the end of it.
The suspect and the Public Prosecution Service have fourteen days to appeal to the Supreme Court.
