Volunteers Remove 500 Kilos of Waste from Fuik Bay After Fuik Day

Local | By Correspondent January 12, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – A group of 45 volunteers from Curaçao Clean Up carried out another large-scale cleanup of Fuik Bay early Saturday morning, removing waste left behind after last weekend’s Fuik Day. The post-event cleanup has become a fixed tradition aimed at restoring the bay after the popular gathering.

The volunteers traveled to the bay by boat and were divided into teams working both above and below the waterline. A group of 35 divers focused on cleaning the seabed, while around ten volunteers collected waste along the shoreline and in shallow waters, including debris trapped in mangroves.

In total, the team collected 40 bags of trash weighing approximately 500 kilograms. Most of the waste consisted of metal and glass items, while plastic once again proved to be the most common material. Notable finds during this year’s cleanup included a television, a drone, parts of a Sea-Doo, and several pairs of sunglasses.

Through the cleanup effort, Curaçao Clean Up is once again highlighting the importance of keeping the island clean. The organization is calling on the community to be more mindful of waste disposal and to take shared responsibility for protecting Curaçao’s natural environment, both on land and in the surrounding sea.
