Vreugdenhil Supermarket Celebrates 95 Years as Curaçao’s Oldest Supermarket

WILLEMSTAD – Vreugdenhil Supermarket, the oldest supermarket on Curaçao, celebrated its 95th anniversary on Saturday, January 10, marking nearly a century as a familiar and trusted part of everyday life on the island.

The milestone was celebrated in festive style during the morning hours, with music, food, drinks and a warm atmosphere that brought together customers, employees and family members. The celebration reflected what Vreugdenhil has represented for generations: community, familiarity and personal connection.

From Ruyterkade to a Household Name

Vreugdenhil’s history dates back to 1931, when founder Frans Vreugdenhil opened a small but innovative shop along Ruyterkade in Willemstad. Originally arriving on the island in the 1920s as a ship captain with the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij, Vreugdenhil decided to settle in Curaçao after meeting his future wife.

His first store introduced a forward-thinking concept for its time, allowing customers to select their own products—an approach that was new and modern in the early 20th century. Over the decades, the business grew steadily alongside the island.

A Family Business Across Generations

During the 1950s, Frans Vreugdenhil expanded the supermarket to several locations across Curaçao. Eventually, the family chose to concentrate operations in a single central location, leading to the current supermarket in Dominguito.

The company has remained a true family business throughout its history. After Frans, the reins were passed to his son Karel Vreugdenhil. Today, the third generation leads the company, with siblings Carlos and Mariela Vreugdenhil and their cousin Alan Evertsz at the helm. Together with a team of around 100 employees, they continue to emphasize personal service, accessibility and a strong connection with customers.

Known as the Friendliest Supermarket

What has consistently set Vreugdenhil apart over its 95 years is its welcoming atmosphere. For many customers, shopping at Vreugdenhil feels like coming home. Staff members are known for their friendliness and genuine engagement, a quality that was clearly evident during the anniversary celebration.

The supermarket offers a wide range of fresh produce, dairy products, bread, meats and everyday groceries, complemented by an extensive cosmetics section. Over time, the cafeteria area has become a popular meeting spot—a place where customers pause, chat and remain part of Curaçao’s daily rhythm.

Special Anniversary Campaign

To mark the anniversary, Vreugdenhil also launched a special promotional campaign. Customers who spend XCG 95 are entered into a draw to win a World Cup travel package to Houston, where Curaçao is set to face Germany. The travel packages are being arranged by Visam Travel Club.

As it celebrates 95 years, Vreugdenhil Supermarket looks back with pride on its long history, while continuing to focus on what has defined the business for generations: friendly service, reliability and a sense of belonging for everyone who walks through its doors.
