Wever-Croes: "Aruba can no longer pay bills"

Local | By Correspondent September 2, 2020

ORANJESTAD - Aruba Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes says her country has run out of money to pay all the bills. For example, there is no money to help companies that are financially suffering from the corona crisis, local media report. Aruba has not been able to reach an agreement with the Netherlands on a new corona loan.

Aruba believes that the conditions set by the Netherlands for this affect the country's autonomy.

According to Wever-Croes, money must come in either from “the left or the right" to pay the bills. According to her, that must be before the civil servants' salaries have to be paid on September 24.

The medical sector, including the association for medical specialists, on Tuesday in an open letter urged the government to agree to the Dutch conditions in order to obtain a loan. They say they make that call to protect the medical sector and patients. Only with the agreement of the Netherlands, good care can be guaranteed in the coming years, they say.
