WILLEMSTAD - President of the Supreme Court, Dineke de Groot paid a working visit to Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten last week. The Supreme Court is a cassation judge in cases originating from the Netherlands and the Caribbean Netherlands, reports the Joint Court of Justice.

Due to the situation regarding Covid-19, it was previously not possible for De Groot to visit the islands. “My first working visit to the three islands was very effective and meaningful,” says de Groot. During her visit it was possible to give shape to the connection with law and justice. According to the Court, this is important because there are differences in law and procedures with regard to the Netherlands and the islands. The working visit provided insight into the geographical, socio-economic and historical circumstances.

The working visit was devoted to getting to know the governors and prime minister of each country. In addition, De Groot gave a guest lecture on the Supreme Court 2021 at the University of Aruba and The University of Curaçao. She was impressed by the interest of those present in the role of the Supreme Court in this part of the Kingdom.

De Groot thinks it is special that she is the first female president of the Supreme Court since its inception in 1838. “It is good that in our time it is common for both a man and a woman to be president of the Supreme Court. It is special to be the first woman to be entrusted with that position," says de Groot.
