WILLEMSTAD - Residents of Piscadera have expressed concern about the construction work being carried out on the Highrise Zakito & Marina project, next to the Royal Palm Resort.
Construction on the new project has recently started. There will be 120 high-rise apartments and a marina. According to residents, the project causes construction nuisance and the plans do not comply with the Island Development Plan (EO) for the area.
The Rhuggenaath government gave the site a long lease in March 2020 and issued a building permit. A Letter of Intent was also signed regarding the lagoon next to the resort. Residents are now wondering whether a definitive permit has been issued. Requests from local residents to the Ministry of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning (VVRP) for clarity remain unanswered.
In a letter, residents state that they recognize the importance of economic development. “But this has to be done in a sustainable way, in balance with nature and the environment.” The residents are making a public request for transparent communication about the progress of the Highrise Zakito & Marina project.
