All Venezuelan female refugees have been released from prison

Main news | By Correspondent July 8, 2022

WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao authorities released all female refugees from Venezuela who were held in the SDKK prison last Monday. Human Rights Watch Curaçao who campaigned for their release is relieved.

The release comes after a court decision in another case and following the filing of summary proceedings. In the relevant ruling, the judge indicated that Venezuelan refugees and crisis migrants may not be locked up together with detainees under a criminal law regime.

Human Rights Watch Curaçao is now awaiting the release of the male refugees who are also being held under criminal law.

An appeal to that effect is being made this morning during the hearing of a preliminary injunction to effect the release of the male Venezuelan refugees from prison.
