Aqualectra Explores Potential Role in Greening Public Transportation in Curaçao

Main news | By Correspondent January 8, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Utility company Aqualectra is examining a possible role in the sustainability transition of public transportation in Curaçao. This was confirmed by Aqualectra’s Chief Financial Officer, Neysa Isenia, in an interview with CFO.nl. According to Isenia, the government has asked Aqualectra to contribute ideas on how public transportation on the island can be made more future-proof.

Aqualectra is already involved in the sector through its position on the board of ABC Busbedrijf. Isenia indicated that Aqualectra’s existing infrastructure and technical expertise make the company a logical partner in discussions on sustainable mobility.

The utility is responsible for the production and distribution of water and electricity across Curaçao and is also rolling out a fiber-optic network. According to Isenia, this combination of activities creates opportunities to better coordinate infrastructure projects, which could help reduce costs and improve efficiency when multiple systems are upgraded simultaneously.

In the interview, Isenia stressed that Aqualectra should not be managed solely from a financial perspective. She argued that public utility companies with societal responsibilities, such as energy provision and potentially public transportation, require a broader approach that balances operational, social, and sustainability considerations.

While no concrete plans or timelines have yet been announced regarding Aqualectra’s involvement in public transportation, Isenia made clear that the topic is firmly on the agenda. The discussions fit within a broader debate about the role of Aqualectra in supporting the sustainability of critical infrastructure on Curaçao.
