WILLEMSTAD - Utility company Aqualectra has signed a memorandum of understanding with six local contractos for a project to create a smart distribution network for water and electricity in Curaçao. The company announced this in a press release. These contractors are Curaçaose Wegenbouw Maatschappij, ELUX Technologies, MNO Vervat Curaçao, Kla Pa Solushon Elektra, Curaçao Industrial Services and Miart Step Up OV & More.
The company says that for some time now it has been preparing to install smart meters throughout the island as part of the AMI proyect. AMI stands for Advance Metering Infrastructure which basically means a smart distribution network. Before signing the agreement, Aqualectra says it has run several tests in Seru Domi, Trai Seru and Bonam. This was done to get a good understanding of the different aspects of the work and to realize this project accordingly.

Aqualectra says that its main objective behind this project is to innovate operations and to give a better service to its clients. The project will last about three years and the investment involved is 151 million guilders. Part of this investment is to acquire meters and the other part is to pay the contractors. This will contribute to the economic activity and jobs in the community. Due to the magnitude of the project and the amount of daily regular work the company has to do, it has chosen to work with the local contractors.
The contractors will implement the project to create a smart and digital distribution network in various phases. They will start by inspecting the areas where the current meters are connected, where this is necessary, they will do repair work. Then they will change the water and electricity meters of all homes and businesses on the island.
