Cabinet is considering intervention of the Kingdom Council of Ministers

WILLEMSTAD, THE HAGUE - The Council of Ministers is considering asking the Kingdom Council of Ministers to intervene in the impasse in Parliament. For some time now, the opposition has refused to help parliament obtain a majority, so that intended Member of Parliament Emmilou Capriles of the PAR party can be sworn in.

Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath says the reason to request assistance from the Kingdom Council of Ministers is inadequate governance. According to the prime minister, the fundamental rights of an elected Member of Parliament are being violated by the opposition.

"Emmilou Capriles' passive right is being violated," said Rhuggenaath. Tomorrow he will argue in the Council of Ministers for intervention by the Netherlands.

Whether the Kingdom Council of Ministers will intervene remains to be seen. In general, the Kingdom Council of Ministers in The Hague is cautious about intervening in Curaçao’s internal affairs. The last time this happened was in 2019, when the Rhuggenaath cabinet was given a financial instruction because of the poor public finances.

Before that, this happened in 2017 with the proposed postponement of the elections by then Prime Minister Gilmar 'Pik' Pisas of the MFK party.
