WILLEMSTAD - “If President Maduro says he is willing to restore ties with the ABC islands, that is a golden opportunity. And we have to grab it with both hands.” This is according to Member of Parliament for the MAN party Eugene Cleopa after hearing of the statement that the president of Venezuela gave yesterday during an international press conference.
In his statement, President Maduro announced that he wants to restore the disrupted relationship with Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire. This happened after Robert Schuddeboom presented his credentials last Tuesday as the new ambassador in Venezuela on behalf of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
According to Cleopa, the Curaçao government must immediately act on this, so that it becomes reality as soon as possible. “Venezuela has meant a lot to Curaçao for decades. Not only because of the PDVSA as the operator of our refinery but also in other economic matters and the relationship in general,” says Cleopa.
The MP also mentions the great contribution and influence that Venezuela has had on Curaçao tourism and the Venezuelan boats that provided the supply of fruit and vegetables for a long time. “As a representative of the people, I appeal to the government to take action, taking into account the interests of Curaçao. And not with the interests of other countries.”
